Sew Retro: The Starlet Suit Jacket

I’ve gone and done it again.

I’ve booked myself on another craftsy course. Yes, yes I know, I have not made the Bombshell dress yet, or the Couture Dress. We all know its not my fault right? I know I am quite lazy, but in this matter, I am ABSOLUTELY blameless.

Gertie has this new course:

As you can see from the poster above, I am already enrolled on the course yay!!!

I do not know when I will actually make this suit, after all, I am still to make the first two dresses. I am going to watch this class just to learn. I know I will learn so many new things from here that I will use on other projects, such as making bound buttonholes, which I have to make on a shirtdress using this vintage vogue designer pattern:

I will also be able to learn how to make welt pockets, which I intend to use on my trench coat which I will make using McCalls 5525:

The trench coat I am currently lusting after is this Burberry Blanket stitch trench coat.

It costs a mighty £1,795. ahem….

I have already ordered some beige stretch cotton sateen and fuchsia china silk lining from, and as we speak, said fabric package is slowly but surely wending its way to yours truly. Exciting stuff. With shipping, it all came down to $54.79 (£35). Not bad aye?

Is anyone else thinking of making a trench coat this year? Better still, has anyone made one, or is currently making one? Any word of advice?

ME TOO!!!! I couldn't resist this one as "that " jacket is my perfect shape!
That vintage dress pattern underneath is fabulous – I love the central skirt pleat & hats off to you making a trench coat …. now mine could maybe do with updating ….stop tempting me!

There's a gaping raincoat-shaped hole in my wardrobe so I've given myself a deadline of March 15 to finish a raincoat/trenchcoat for spring. I'm kind of at a loss as to what kind of fabric to look for, though. Can't wait to see yours!

I signed up within a minute of getting the email!!! Like you I think it will be really useful tool for a few other projects I have lined up this year.
Speaking of projects – LOVE that trench coat you are lusting over…the blanket stitch is such a brilliant detail (and easy to copy!)!

Oh dear me I feel my credit-card about to be flexed again (LOL!)
I saw this course posted over on VickikateMakes
too today. I too have signed up for the other 2, but when they're this good (and when you consider how much learning you can get for so little spend) it really seems a bargain to me 🙂

  5. February 16, 2012 / 6:07 pm

lol. way to go. I am going to spend tonight watching it.

  6. February 16, 2012 / 6:08 pm

I did too. I did not even blink. lol. Yeah the blanket stitch gives it a nice touch I think.

  7. February 16, 2012 / 6:09 pm

you could start by looking online for a coat you like, then look at the fabric they used. The Burberry coat used gabardine, but I could not find Gabardine in Beige, so I settled for cotton sateen.

  8. February 16, 2012 / 6:11 pm

hahahahahahha. I love that jacket too. though like i said, i don't know when I will make it.

  9. February 16, 2012 / 7:51 pm

Yep, just signed up! Didn't take much thought 🙂
I've been eyeing a trench style, too, it's just so classic you can't go wrong.
Oh, and that shirt dress pattern is perfect!

  10. February 16, 2012 / 8:34 pm

Oh, Burberry… their trenches are delicious! I love that blanket stitch detail! Amy at Sew Well made a lovely trench coat a while back– you should check hers out! I really like the blanket stitch detail.

I'm skipping out on Gertie's jacket course (at least for now) as it's not my style at all, but I'm really excited to see everyone else's! I'm thinking about taking the new Kenneth King jeans class that Craftsy just announced… it sounds really cool!

  11. February 16, 2012 / 11:00 pm

Yeah I was looking at that one, and am still trying to decide if I should take it. Trousers don't really fit me. I really find it hard to find a pair that fits.

  12. February 17, 2012 / 1:39 am

I signed up as well! It's fun to see Gertie's cute jacket pop up all over Sewing Blog Land today. See you in class!

  13. February 17, 2012 / 2:49 am

Well don't feel bad cause I have no excuse but have not made my bombshell dress yet. I've also enrolled in the Jacket course and am sooooooo tempted to do the couture one.

  14. February 17, 2012 / 10:01 am

I am going to jump on the bandwagon too and try this course!

  15. February 17, 2012 / 12:14 pm

Oh my goodness, Gertie's jacket is gorgeous!! And how much for that tech coat!!?! :0

  16. February 18, 2012 / 9:33 am

I'd love to make a trench coat as my current one (from H&M over ten years ago) isn't fit to be seen. It seems like a pretty complicated project though, so I'm waiting for the right pattern to come along.

  17. February 19, 2012 / 9:11 am

I'm beginning to think I should have signed up for Gerties course before I went headfirst into welt pockets! I love that jacket too. Oh well!

  18. February 20, 2012 / 2:00 am

    Hey Dibs,
I've been considering a trench coat. I have a Pattern Runway pattern that's for a winter coat, but the shape is PERFECT for a military-esque trench. I'm not certain if I'm yet up to the challenge of a coat yet though! Coats currently scare me more than pants…

ALSO… I gifted you with a Liebster Blog Award. More info on my blog Down the Retro Rabbit Hole! Congratulations!

  19. March 13, 2012 / 5:30 am

Oh I just bought that trench coat! I can't wait to see your version and hear how the pattern sews up!

  20. March 13, 2012 / 10:38 am

    Have you started yours yet?

  21. March 13, 2012 / 10:38 am

the couture one is worth it, trust me. so much to learn.

  22. March 13, 2012 / 10:38 am

    lol. jump away.

  23. March 13, 2012 / 10:39 am

tell me about it. When I saw the price I thought I had to buy lenses. Some people seriously have money in this world.

  24. March 13, 2012 / 10:40 am

    Thanks Tina.

  25. March 13, 2012 / 10:41 am

You bought the trench coat? or the pattern? If it is the coat, WOW…respect.
